⭐This is a precision CNC-machined basket, not a stamped one. It comes with a generic 49.7mm tamper included. Each basket is CNC machined from a solid block of stainless steel and finished with precision laser-cut holes
Why choose a stepdown basket?
A narrower basket naturally restricts flow, meaning you can grind coarser for the same recipe compared to a standard 58mm basket.
This helps reduce astringency and bitterness by minimizing the impact of ultra-fine particles.
The deeper puck design also prevents ultra-fines from passing through the bottom layer, resulting in less channeling and more consistent extractions.
The taste difference between a standard 58mm basket and a 58mm → 49mm step-down basket is striking. The 49mm step-down version produces a brighter, cleaner, and higher-clarity espresso.
We designed our step-down basket because 58mm is the most widely adopted size in the coffee industry.
This means you can enjoy the benefits of a 49mm step-down basket without changing your entire coffee setup.
Puck Screens and Spring are optional. When your dose is about 10–25% below the basket’s full capacity, extra headspace can become an issue. Placing the spring on top of the puck screen helps eliminate that gap while also working as a shower screen to create back pressure.
The added back pressure makes it possible to grind a bit coarser, extend shot times, and achieve higher brewing pressures.
We use the spring when dosing lower than 18g
Basket Specification:

Bought the 58-49 mm step down and the 58-32 Convex CNC baskets. I use the 58-49 step down as my daily driver and mostly use 18 gram in and 36 out of medium or light roast. Once dialed in and water flows homogeneously through the puck astringency and bitterness are gone. Shots are more consistent and I’m finally able to pull out amazing flavors that I can’t on other baskets. Removing puck is a little challenging I think it’s because the side walls are straight. It’s a small change to my work flow and easily worth it.
I have the 58-49 step down High-flow basket on order and can’t wait to see what that can do with light roasts and longer ratios.
The 9Panda team are very prompt and a joy to work with. They helped me with my questions and got my order as expected.
